Boreland wants to be counted in for a Windsor Park card
“Count me in” was the response from Coleraine’s Matthew Boreland following confirmation that a Windsor Park boxing event is being planned for next year, with Lewis Crocker set for a return to the national stadium.
Boreland has fond memories of making the ring walk at Windsor Park, after a heated build up towards the event with his opposition, he would claim the Irish title there with a sixth-round TKO victory over then-champion Ruadhan Farrell
The Coleraine fighter is now hoping to have the opportunity to return to the iconic setting, with promoter Jamie Conlan confirming that Windsor Park has already been booked for the second quarter of 2027.
Crocker, who became IBF welterweight champion at the stadium last year in the first-ever all-Irish world title fight, is expected to headline the proposed event, although he must first overcome Owen Cooper at the SSE Arena on December 19.
Conlan has described Cooper as a dangerous opponent, believing his aggressive style will bring out the best in Crocker.
“Every fight is a tough fight. He’s in your face from the first second to the last. He will bring out the best in Lewis Crocker,” Conlan told Irish-boxing.com.
The possibility of a rematch between Crocker and Connah Walker has also been discussed, with Conlan suggesting a second meeting between the pair, potentially with world-title implications, would be an even bigger occasion.
Matthew was unsuccessful in his bid for a second belt earlier this year when he faced Joe McGrail in Croke Park, where much to the upset to Boreland and his supporters across the country; he would be counted out in the fourth round after falling to the canvas from a swift left hook to the body.
The Windsor card Boreland wants in on may be some time away, but he hinted to the Coleraine Chronicle that a return fight is on the cards for February.
“I’d like another in April or May. I’ve said to my Manager that I want on the Windsor card too and I can’t see why they wouldn’t have me fighting on it.
“All being well, I’ll have a fight scheduled for the end of February. I’d like another in April or May - and then to get a fight on the Windsor Card would be the icing on the cake for the year.
“My plan is to get four fights for the year ahead.”
