Questions raised over A26 dual carriageway plans

Upgrade proposals lost in ‘policy maze’, says councillor
What has happened to proposals to upgrade the remaining single-carriageway section of the A26 between the Drones Road and Coleraine?
That was the question posed by a Ballymoney councillor when DfI (Department for Infrastructure) officials paid their annual visit to Causeway Coast and Glens Council chamber last week
The DUP’s Mervyn Storey suggested the long awaited upgrade had become lost in a “maze” of strategic plans and policy documents produced by the department over the last decade.
In response Divisional Roads Manager Alan Keys said the project’s future may soon become more clear.
“In terms of the documents there is a lot that’s being updated over the next few years,” said Mr Keys. But he added: “They are all interlinked to some extent.
Of particular relevance, said Mr Keys, was the Regional Strategic Transport Plan which should be ready for public consultation “reasonably soon”.
“That will set the direction for likes of the A26 and the Ballykelly bypass.
“All those strategic roads improvements – they are in this plan. And that sets out what will be taken forward in the next 10 years as a priority for the department.”
