Councillor calls for dedicated inclusive recreational space for young adults with additional needs

Councillor calls for dedicated inclusive recreational space
A MOTION aimed at improving recreational and social opportunities for young adults with additional needs has been brought forward by Councillor Ciarán McQuillan to Causeway Coast and Glens Council.
The proposal calls on the Council to explore the feasibility of developing a dedicated, inclusive play and recreational facility where young adults with additional needs can socialise, participate in activities and enjoy outdoor spaces in a safe, welcoming and accessible environment.
Speaking on the motion, Councillor Ciarán McQuillan said: “Many young adults with additional needs face significant barriers when it comes to accessing suitable recreational and social facilities. “While there have been welcome improvements in inclusive play provision for children, there remains a noticeable gap for older teenagers and young adults who deserve opportunities to meet friends, take part in activities and enjoy their local community in the same way as everyone else.”
The motion also calls for direct engagement with young adults with additional needs, along with their families and carers, to better understand their experiences and identify gaps in existing services.
Councillor Ciarán McQuillan added: “Any future facility should be shaped by the people who would use it. By listening directly to young adults, their families and the organisations that support them, we can ensure that any proposal genuinely meets local needs and creates a space that is meaningful, accessible and welcoming.”
As part of the proposal, the Council would work alongside organisations such as Compass Advocacy Network and other community and voluntary groups supporting people with additional needs. The motion further requests that potential funding opportunities and partnership arrangements be explored to support the delivery and long-term sustainability of any future facility.
He concluded: “This is about creating opportunities, tackling social isolation and ensuring that young adults with additional needs have access to the same quality of recreational and social experiences as everyone else. I look forward to working with local organisations, families and Council officers to progress this important initiative.”
