New league season will get underway this weekend

The 2026/27 Irish League season will get underway as scheduled this weekend after all following an Emergency General Meeting of the NI Football League on Tuesday night.

"Following this evening’s EGM, the Board of the Northern Ireland Football League is pleased to confirm that all resolutions have been successfully passed, allowing the 2026/27 season to commence as scheduled on Friday night," confirmed a NIFL spokesperson.

"The new football pyramid marks the beginning of an exciting new era for the game, creating a stronger structure and future for football across Northern Ireland.

"The Board acknowledges the procedural error that brought us to this point. We are committed to commissioning an independent review of the process, which will make recommendations to prevent and minimise the risk of any recurrence.

"We thank all our member clubs for their support and commitment throughout this process. We also wish the clubs moving to the National Conference League every success and thank them for the important role they have played in NIFL’s journey.

"We now look forward to an exciting new season and the continued growth of football in Northern Ireland," added the spokesperson.

Coleraine begin the 2026/27 Sports Direct Premiership season at Dungannon Swifts on Saturday afternoon.
