Community left shocked by tragic accident

Tributes have been paid to father-of-two Danny Cassidy who was killed in an accident involving a skip in the Aghadowey area last week.

Emergency services were called to the scene of what police described as “a sudden death” at around 8:45am on the Coolyvenny Road on October 28.

The Chronicle understands a skip was involved and the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

Local DUP councillor for Bann, Michelle Knight-McQuillan said the accident was a “big shock”.

“My thoughts are with the immediate family and those who were on the scene at the time,” said the representative,” she said.

“Sudden deaths like this are impactful on everyone. I know that the rest of the family and neighbourhood will rally around them at this time to support them after this big shock.”

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service confirmed that two Emergency Ambulances and two Ambulance Officers were dispatched.

“No one was taken from the scene,” added a spokesperson.

A PSNI spokesperson said police alongside emergency service colleagues had attended the scene and the Health and Safety Executive has been informed.

The HSENI said it was aware of the incident in Aghadowey and was “making enquiries"

A funeral for Mr Cassidy, who was from the Ballerin area, took place on Sunday November 1 in St. John’s Church, Coleraine.

Rev Fr Neil Farren described him “a character” who’d loved working with his brother Adrian.

“That character was written all over him,” said Fr Farren, “you could see it in his face.”

He added: “There was an incredible sense of family spirit, and incredible sense of loyalty and an incredible sense of devotion

“He leaves behind good memories, plenty of laughter and above all what it means to be a devoted son, brother, partner and family man

“He will be missed by many here who knew him and worked with him.”
